  13. I am not a great advocate of LaTeX, but credit where credit is due.

  15. Since I have the luxury of a fast, independent machine for the moment,
  16. I removed all traces of latex209 and replaced them with latex2e.
  17. Compared with the "ideal" packages we have been talking about, LaTeX2e
  18. is unbelievably messy, but kpathsea path-searching makes that
  19. irrelevant.  I was able to dump the new latex.fmt with ease, and I
  20. have spent as much of the rest of the day trying to break the new
  21. LaTeX2e with old files as I could bear.

  23. So far I have not managed to break anything, which does not
  24. really prove too much, since I do not make really intensive
  25. use of LaTeX.  
  26.  
  27. What it does suggest, however, is that the LaTeX2e claim of
  28. backward compatibility may be quite sound, and that the
  29. problem of needing 2 paths for LaTeX may not be all that great.

  31. In the residual lot of shipments of UnixTeX that take place from now
  32. on, I am convinced that an immediate conversion to LaTeX2e is the best
  33. plan.  One distinct change that will require, however, is in our
  34. version of the web2c makefile where the format dump for latex should
  35. call for latex.dtx as the input file.

  37. I propose to make the latex209 stuff available in a gzipped
  38. file, with a strong warning about the risks of confusion owing
  39. to filenames that are the same in both latex209 and latex2e
  40. But unless I can discover a real problem in converting immediately
  41. to LaTeX2e (and I have been trying hard to find such a problem)
  42. I can see no reason to hesitate in the conversion.

  44. I am using the directory tree exactly as it comes off CTAN,
  45. and dropping it into texmf unchanged.  There are gross amounts
  46. of redundancy involved in this approach, but at least it seems
  47. to work.  I have made up *ps files for clsguide, fntguide and
  48. usrguide, and will place them in texmf/doc/ready.  I suppose the
  49. dvi files might go into texmf/doc/latex.  The internal structure of
  50. the LaTeX2e package makes this sort of decision very difficult.
